Make Your Own Kit:
Step by Step Instructions

Materials Needed:

  • You will need 2 single-sided cotton swabs or 1 double-sided cotton swab. *Avoid touching the cotton ends with your fingers.

  • Paper envelopes for placing the cotton swabs after sample collection (one for each person) and a a larger paper envelope to Include smaller envelopes with samples. (Envelopes should be paper without any form of lining on the inside.)

  • Tape is needed to secure the envelopes. Do not lick the envelope in order to avoid contamination of the samples.

You will need to set aside an envelope for each participant. Please include the following on each envelope. The order number is provided at checkout. The race types are Asian, African American, Caucasian, Hispanic, Native American and Other (provide explanation). Under relationships indicate whether the person being tested is the alleged Father, Child, Mother, Grandmother, Grandfather, Aunt, Uncle, Sibling, Other (provide explanation).

Using a cotton swab, rub the cotton end of the swab along the inside of the cheek applying medium pressure for 20-30 seconds of vigorous rubbing (the goal is to collect skin cells). Repeat using another single-sided cotton swab or the other end of a two sided cotton swab.

Place the cotton swab in the envelope corresponding to the individual and seal the envelope with tape. Do not lick the envelope.

Place the sealed envelopes into a larger mailing envelope.
